The ARB Show returned to Westonbirt in May for a celebration of the world of tree care and the team from JDS were in attendance enjoying all the show had to offer!

ARB Show 2024 featured some of the biggest industry brands and the latest arboricultural innovations. There was plenty of choice, with activities and over 80 exhibitors showcasing how fast innovations were moving in the arb industry. A strong mix of big names alongside emerging brands were in attendance, complementing the exciting activities that took place across the site.

Families could visit the public-focused attractions, which showcased the importance of arboriculture and tree care. Offering a chance for Westonbirt visitors to try tree climbing and access a programme of talks and activities, the show highlighted the importance of arboriculture.

ARB Show 2024 promised a celebration of trees and the latest advances in tree care and the science of arboriculture. Whether you were an arborist or a nature lover, it was an event that put trees in the spotlight.

[Edinburgh, 12.03.24] – The annual general meeting of the Scottish branch of the
esteemed British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) witnessed a
remarkable turnout last week. Amidst the array of discussions and resolutions, one
standout highlight for JDS was the appointment of Josh Dow, Managing Director of
JDS Gardening, as the new Vice-Chair for Scotland.

Founded in 1972, BALI stands as a beacon of excellence within the landscape
industry, boasting over 900 accredited members. Josh Dow's elevation to the role of
Vice-Chair underscores not only his personal achievements but also the burgeoning
success of JDS Gardening, a rapidly expanding business known for its commitment
to quality and innovation.

In his acceptance speech, Josh Dow expressed his gratitude, stating, "I am delighted
to assume the role of Vice-Chair for BALI's Scottish committee. I can’t wait to work
with Ryan who taught me everything I know. We are looking forward to starting some
exciting new projects together."

Josh at the age of 26 has spearheaded the growth of JDS Gardening, establishing it
as a prominent brand in Edinburgh and the Lothians while upholding the highest
industry standards. His ascent to a leadership position within BALI reflects not only
his individual merit but also the dedication and expertise of his team.

Coming from an educational background Ryan Love, Managing Director of R. Love
Landscape & Construction Ltd, also serves as the regional chairman of BALI. Ryan
is a strong advocate for the promotion of landscaping & horticulture especially from a
young age. He commended Josh’s appointment remarking, "It is gratifying to
witness Josh's progression from student to industry leader. Things have really come
full circle and his journey exemplifies the importance of nurturing talent within our

This was a recent ​front garden renovation project for a client in Corstorphine.
This job involved the removal of the old stone edging, replacing with a new aluminium border. Removal of old stones in the garden and replacing it with a geotexile membrane and laying decorative aggregates on top. The aggregate was laid to a depth of 50mm covering 15 square meters- this was 2 tonnes which was all laid by hand by the JDS team.

Leylandii Hedging is a common sight in many gardens in the UK- Its cheap, it grows quickly
(up to 15 meters in 16 years) and it is evergreen. This means it provides very effective
screening and privacy all year round. However, it is not without its draw backs. Leylandii
when not properly maintained can grow taller than your house and encroach on your
neighbour’s property! Another issue is when not properly maintained you are also limited
with how aggressively you can cut it- go too far and you ‘brown’ the hedge i.e., send it into
shock preventing regrowth in that area. Many leylandii’s we have removed have been due
neglect, disputes with neighbours and/or the council!

So, our client decided to remove the young leylandii hedge which was previously in place
and instead replant with yew hedging as well as smarten up the edging and the borders.
Yew hedging much the same as leylandii is evergreen and can grow to a large size, so it
functions well as all year-round screening. Unlike leylandii it can tolerate hard pruning and is
slower growing averaging between 20cm-40cm per year. Yew is also very low maintenance
requiring only one cut per year however with regular maintenance can also be grown into
intricate shapes. Yew is one of the longest living trees in the UK with the oldest specimen
located in Scotland which is estimated to be 1,500-3,000 years old.

We started first began with digging out the old hedging and turning over the soil. We then
mixed through new rich organic matter and compost with the newly turned over bed mixing
well to provide the ideal conditions for planting. We then started on the garden edging we
had just shy of 5 meters of aircraft grade aluminium edging to go it provides extremely
durable border edging and due to the flexible nature of the metal it can be manipulated and
easily shaped to form smooth and classic lines. Easily installed we cut out the new border
and simply joined together the edging giving the bed a definitive border with the lawn. Then
our lead gardener decided on the placement and spacing between the yew shrubs- once he
was happy the yew shrubs started to go in. Once in their holes the soil was packed in hard
around it to keep the roots healthy. We finished off with a dash of water to help the new
hedging take route in its new home.
