Our commercial fencing team in action at the BP Garage in South Queensferry |
One of our recent commercial fencing and planting contracts was a revamp of a car park at the BP Garage in South Queensferry for Black & Veatch. The surrounding areas of the car park were bare and unloved. There was no official boundary either which needed to be updated as well. This was to increase the privacy for residents who overlook the site as well as the security of the car park.
After meeting the client, we decided on the installation of a feather edged fence 2.4m tall which is aesthetically pleasing and provides very effective screening boosting security thus satisfying both of the client’s needs. We also agreed with the client that some cheap effective greenery would also help the aesthetics of the site. So, we chose leylandii as a quick, cost effective and aesthetic solution to add some green to the space. |

Commercial Fencing Installation
The first thing to do was to prep the site the team as standard organised all the materials which had been delivered to the site, marked out where the fence would run and determined where to place the holes, following the specifications of the quote. Holes were dug to allow 33% of the post to be underground, then the posts went in. We added enough concrete to fill 90% of the hole securing the post in place and painted the bottom of the posts with Bitumen which prevents rot increasing the lifespan of the fence drastically! Following this the rails were set, and the overlapping slats began to be installed. Now it was really looking good.
Ground Preparation & Planting Services
After the last finishing touches had been done the planting side of the job could take place. We first spread new organic material and planting mix which is a mix of compost, mulch and soil. The planting mix includes slow-release nutrients, bone meal and calcified seaweed helping to keep the soil and the plants extra healthy! Our head gardener then marked out how the plants would be distributed and then the digging started. The plants were equally spaced with the leylandii going along in front of the fence. Then in the more open space we scattered some Hebe’s which are a dense evergreen dwarf shrub which has a lovely white flower in summer.
Next, we laid geotextile over the top of the soil and then spread bark to a depth of 50mm. This was to discourage and suppress weeds whilst also keeping maintenance of the site to a minimum.
